Problem With Geometry? VSS Driven from Datum Graph

I needed a spring that I could use as a flexible component. It is a closed spring, so the pitch is different at the ends of the spring. I could have used the helical sweep tool, but I always fight with getting the variable pitch to work correctly and I wanted a bit more control. I decided to use a variable section sweep driven from a datum graph instead.

The datum graph that I used is shown below:

datum_graph.png

The X-Axis is distance along the spring, and the Y-Axis is number of turns. The spring that I am using is 3 inches in length, has a wire diameter of 0.041 inches and has 27 turns. The spring is closed so the first and last turn each use one wire diameter (0.041 inches) of the length of the spring, while the other 25 turns take up the rest of the spring's length (2.918 inches).

I create the foundation of the spring's geometry by sweeping a line around a trajectory. To spin the swept line around the trajectory I feed (trajpar * spring_length) into the datum graph to calculate what turn I am on, which I multiply by 360 degrees to get the angle of the line (which is sd5). The relation is shown below:

number_of_turns = evalgraph('SPRING_TURN_NUMBER', trajpar*spring_length)

sd5 = number_of_turns * 360

The result initially looks great (swept feature on left, and the final spring geometry on the right):

geometry.png

If I highlight the the swept surface (the image on the left above) I see some really funny stuff going on:

sketch_junk.png

Can anyone tell me what is going on here? The crazy going on along the axis of the spring shouldn't be there. Is this harmless visual junk that Creo is spitting out, or a symptom of an underlying problem with my relations in the Variable Section Sweep.

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

How to disign a flexible tarpaulin

Mass moment of inertia in parameter

I have a part with abt 30 instances. now i need to find their mass moment of inertia. Is there any relation (jus like mp_cg_x), that i can add in relation and call in family table so that i'll get all the inertia values updated automatically in my family table???

Or Is there any way to find the moment of inertia without opening the instances individually???

Curves and Surface Models - the good, the bad, the ugly

Hi designers,

I have a report to report about the different curve and surface models used in CAD, specifically Creo. I was wondering what degree of freedom they give designers? Also what is good about using them and what is not/what is frustrating?

Thanks in advance,

Creating Geometry under Surface Features?

I have a set of surface features created from Creo's Welding Application that connect different parts in my assembly.  I was wondering if it was possible to easily create geometry under the surface region between the surface feature and the part below. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Motion Envelope Refinement

I'm working on creating motion envelopes for tires and I'm wondering if the community has some tips or pro/workaround tricks for refineing envelopes.

I've been able to improve the mesh quality quite a bit by increasing the motion analysis frame rate, shade quality, edge display quality.

What I started with (shade=3, edge=medium, frame rate=10, envelope quality=10):

env_before.png

What I have now (shade=10, edge=very high, frame rate=100, envelope quality=10):

env_after.png

A big improvement, but the mesh still has jagged elements that I would like to smooth out:

env_mesh.png

Does anyone know if there are some other options I can tweak or tools I can use in Creo 2 to create a smooth mesh?  I imagine there's a smoothing function in the surfacing or reverse engineering applications, but I don't have access to them.

I know how to do what I'm looking for in Matlab, but I'd prefer to do this in Creo if possible.

Thanks!

Using Sketch from One Part in Multiple Parts

I am hoping to find out how I can use a sketch in multiple parts. Much like using a saved sketch in a new part but I want to sketches to update when the sketch on the original part is modified. I am making a model that will reuse the same sketch in multiple parts and don't want to manually update each of them everytime I make a change to one of the parts. Please let me know if there is a way of connecting them.

Thanks

WTH?? Cosmetic threads no longer showing up in creo.

It used to be that there was a bug in creo where cosmetic threads only showed up in wireframe, not hidden line view.  Now in M180 I can't get the threads to show no matter what.  It's not a layer issue as all are unhidden, and nothing os set to hide.  It doesn't matter if the threads are part of a "hole feature" or done as a separate feature (as in my case).  The weird thing is that the threads show, print, and PDF like they should in dwg mode.  It's only now in modeling mode they don't show.  I BELIEVE they completely stopped being visible when we went to M180.

Anyone seen this, any ideas?

Thanks!

Option to automatically retrieve references when using external references

I have a sheetmetal piece which has many external references for connector cutouts. The external references are based on the connector placement on the board in the assembly.

Anyway, if I open up the sheetmetal piece and don't manually retrieve the references, I can get issues when working on the parts - especially with REFERENCE patterns.

Is there an option to have ProE automatically retrieve references for external references, similar to retrieve_data_sharing_ref_parts for data sharing features like Copy Geometry and Merge?

PTC user enhancement requests

Is there a place I can make user enhancement requests directly to PTC?  I have a number of suggestions I'd like to make with respect to modelling and assemblies.  I have been a UGNX user for years and I am surprised how out of date Creo is relative to UGNX.

Flange problems

Hi,

I've been having flange problems in Creo Parametric 2.0.

I've created a part where it works fine (see first pic).

When I make an other but similar part (it's just longer at the base), my flange doesn't work anymore. This happens to a copy of the original part, but also when I create a brand new part and draw it from scratch. The flange does work however when I change the angle to 85° instead of 90°.

Any ideas?

Hi Everybody,

Please can somebody help me and give me an advise with sheetmetal unbending?

I try to do this in both solid and then convert and sheetmetal, but Creo cant unbend it.

I uses Blend feature to create this shape.

I use Creo Parametric 2.0

Or some advise how i should create it?

Please see attach file.

Need to get max. dimension (LXB) of a part using mapkey/Relations

Hi Team,

I am a creo 2 user and looking for a feasable solution in getting "maximum dimension Length & Width of a sheet metal / extruded or plastic part".

1) For basic sheet metal components am able to get the dimensions using Flat pattern preview window, but for complex bent modules am unable to unbend.

Pls. help me to get the unbend dimensions using a map key or formula driven using Relations.

Is there any formula to calculate maximum dimension of a part.

Request anyone to guide me.

Thanks & Regards

Modify end states in Windchill 10.2

Hello All,

We are currently in process of upgrading out customized version of Windchill 9.1 to 10.2.  We are wanting much less customization in 10.2 than we had with 9.1 due to problems we had with the old system.

My question is.  we want the lifecycle states listed below, and aren't seeing them in the out of the box literature we have seen so far.  Are they easily configured or do they take custom code to create?

Thanks! - James Hall

Lifecycle states we have now:

In Work - Under Review - Rework - Reviewed - Approved - Prototype - Released - Superceded - Inactive -  Obsolete

Getting the overall dimension of blank without flat pattern

$

We are facing a problem with sheetmetal. I need the surface area, overall length/breadth of the blank shape of the part. Also the Description of the part should be like "Name x length x breadth x thickness". Now it is possible by using feature parameters in "Flat Pattern". But all the sheetmetal parts in the assembly have unflatten parts (family table instance without flat pattern). All the parts are connected to skelton and updated when the parameters in skelton changed.

But the problem starts when we update the skelton. As the "flat pattern" feature is suppressed in the instances used to create the assembly, the corresponding parameters will not get updated and thereby the Surface Area, Length, Width & Description in BOM is not updating.

We tried the below methods to solve the problem.

1) Open each sheetmetal parts - resume the "flat pattern" - regenerate - suppress - save

But this is a time consuming work and it kills the entire concept of automation. Again manual error happens a lot as the users miss some parts

2) We create unbend all - measure length - save as feature - measure width - save as feature - bend back all.

Then we use the parameters in the measure feature to create the required output. But this method is tiresome to build as we have some 50-60 sheetmetal parts in an assembly and we have to create approx 750 assemblies.

Can anybody suggest a method to find the overall length/width of blank shape (available in flat preview) and connect it to some part parameters without using flat pattern or unbend-measure

Bonjour,

Comment peut-on faire un lissage entre un cercle et un rectangle ?

Je n'arrive pas à avoir un résultat correcte, je pense qu'il faut mettre un sommet de missage sur le point de départ or il ne veut pas.

Cordialement
